Pre-Implantation Genetic Diagnosis?

Posted by Muffin89 on December 1, 2010 at 11:46 AM

I just wanted to know if anyone had any thoughts on genetic diagnosing. If you believe that it is murder? The "Designer Babies" ordeal. If you think it can be very beneficial to families that are having problems having children or have had problems in the past with childbirth. Just let me know your thoughts. I'm extremely interested! :D

My name is Brianna Harden and I am a senior Community Health major at Eastern Illinois University,. My thoughts on genetic diagnosing are bias. I do feel that it will benefit and possibly decrease the chances of a child being born with a genetic defect or a terminal illness. Genetic screening has made it possible to eliminate these factors. It does help people who are not able to have children of their own but then there is the issue with people saying is it ethical or morally acceptable to design a child for the parents benefit. It is like the parents are trying to prevent dealing with a "problem". If people start basically "designing" their own children will that make society look down on those who have birth defects or are terminally ill? I feel that it will create more issues rather than be positive.
